Duplex steels combine austenitic and ferritic phases. Buyers often compare duplex 2205 with super duplex 2507 when common austenitic stainless steels may not meet a strength or corrosion requirement. These two duplex grades are not interchangeable merely because their names sound close.
What the numbers mean in practice
Duplex 2205 is associated with UNS S32205 or S31803, EN 1.4462. Super duplex 2507 is UNS S32750, EN 1.4410. Typical Outokumpu chemistries for Forta DX 2205 and Forta SDX 2507 illustrate the difference: 2205 has about 22.4% chromium, 5.7% nickel, 3.1% molybdenum and 0.17% nitrogen, while 2507 has about 25.0% chromium, 7.0% nickel, 4.0% molybdenum and 0.27% nitrogen. These numbers are published typical values, not universal specification limits or the chemistry of a specific shipment.
The greater chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content of 2507 improves resistance to localized corrosion in many chloride environments. A pitting resistance equivalent number, or PREN, provides a rough screening indicator; it cannot certify performance in a real service condition by itself. Outokumpu lists approximate PRE values of 35 for its 2205 and 43 for its 2507.
Strength: both are high-strength steels
In the cited ASTM A240 plate, sheet and strip table, 2205 S32205 has minimum 0.2% yield strength of 450 MPa, tensile strength of 655 MPa and elongation of 25%. The corresponding listed values for 2507 S32750 are 550 MPa yield, 795 MPa tensile and 15% elongation. Compare these with the relevant purchase standard and product form. A different code or condition can have a different requirement.
That higher yield strength may permit thinner sections in some engineered designs, but it does not mean buyers should simply reduce thickness. Pressure code calculations, corrosion allowances, stiffness, fabrication and inspection requirements all have to be checked. Grade selection is an engineering decision; a stock list cannot replace that design work.
Corrosion and service conditions
2205 is used in chemical process equipment, marine installations, pulp and paper and some oil and gas applications. It offers good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking compared with common austenitic grades. Super duplex 2507 is chosen for more severe chloride-bearing service, such as demanding seawater, offshore or desalination systems where the project specifies it.
Neither grade has blanket immunity. Temperature, acidity, oxygen, deposits, stagnant crevices and welding quality can change the outcome. Duplex grades can be harmed by unsuitable heat treatment or welding practices that disturb the intended phase balance. Check service limits and fabrication procedures with the design team and material manufacturer.
Cost and availability
2507 contains more expensive alloying elements and typically commands a higher material price than 2205. The cost gap changes with alloy markets and product form. Processing, certification, lead time and minimum order quantity can be as important as the basic per-kilogram price. A stronger material may reduce the total installed cost in a design that actually uses that strength, but that benefit must be calculated, not assumed.
Ask for a quote based on the same dimensions, quantity, finish, certificate and destination. If only 2205 is readily available, never substitute it for specified 2507 without written engineering acceptance. The reverse substitution also needs review: different fabrication requirements and price make automatic upgrades risky.
How to specify the purchase
Write the UNS designation, product form, standard, dimensions and inspection requirements. Distinguish S31803 from S32205 where the project requires the latter; these designations are closely related but have different composition limits. Request EN 10204 3.1 documentation with a matching heat number. For demanding service, discuss any required ferrite, corrosion or third-party tests up front.
Read the Duplex 2205 plates page and send the service and size requirements for a tailored quote.
